Probably a bit late now, but Paul Lewis is talking about the riots at Westminster Skeptics at the Old Monk Exchange tonight, starts at 7.30pm. I'm guessing you won't make it now, but keep an eye out for the podcast (via the Pod Delusion) - I saw him speak about the riots last autumn and it was pretty thought-provoking.

Yes I have that - don't remember it being so helpful but I'll take another look. I have to write a review of Clive Bloom's Riot City and talk about the riots on Resonance tomorrow and maybe write an update to the piece I wrote at the time.

Paul Lewis was due to speak at Marxism on the topic but couldn't make it which was really disappointing as I'd be very keen to hear him speak more politically about them.

He was particularly interesting on the different character of the riots in different places, making it hard to speak of "the riots" as a homogenous event. In fact, the recording is here:

Not a fan of the Spirit Level then JJ? Tis true that the recent piece veers much more in that direction than the book does.

Your prediction that the riots would kick off a prolonged losing streak for the coalition proved correct (and it really didn't seem like that to me at the time!). Regarding your remark that "Images of burning buildings, cars aflame and stripped-out shops may provide spectacular fodder for a restless media, ever hungry for new stories and fresh groups to demonise", I would just that it didn't require much media manipulation for the rioters to become a focus of popular disgust. Images of working class people jumping out their burning homes did not need to be repeated on slow-mo in order for many to react with understandable fury. The tottenham residents I spoke to on the first night of the riots had been privy to a particularly unmediated experience of the riots, but of course told me that the looting of small businesses was "out of order". I remember being slightly irritated by the sense amongst much of the left that those who were "condemning" were incapable of engaging with the wider causes. In fact the polls showed a big crossover between those who a) condemned the riots b) blamed austerity. Scabbing, too, arises out of a particular social context and is often driven by poverty...
